This year we are again hearing about the need to vote for people who are not politicians. This was said during previous campaigns by Tea Party people. They were claiming that common non-politicians devoted to American values replacing "politicians" would be great for the country.
Today we have people who are pointing to a do-nothing Congress as reason to elect an outsider. But I submit that the problem isn't politicians in general. It is specific politicians – yours, not mine. We can't have a Congress without politicians.
Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina are being described as "outsider" or non-establishment candidates. Trump has risen about the non-politician nonsense. On CNN last night he told Don Lemon that he was now "in the world of politics. I'm sort of a politician I guess you would say."
